Recent legislation enacted in Connecticut expands the paid sick leave law to cover all employers and employees in the future. The current law only applies to employers with 50+ employees in the state, and those designated as “service workers.”
The planned expansion will happen in phases, and the first phase is planned to go into effect on January 1, 2025. This expansion will require employers with 25+ employees in the state to provide paid sick leave. Each year thereafter, the threshold will decrease to 11 (January 1, 2026) and 1 (January 1, 2027).
Private-sector employees working for a covered employer will also be entitled to receive paid sick leave (with the exception of seasonal employees and specific construction workers who are unionized).
The law currently requires that employers using the accrual method must provide at least 1 hour of paid sick leave per 40 hours worked. The change occurring January 1, 2025, will decrease that to 1 hour of paid sick per 30 hours worked, up to a max of 40 hours per year.
